Tiger

Today's ride was Tiger Mountain.  Up the fire road, down Preston and then down another trail.  The climb took about 1:15 which is a lot.  I use to climb it in 45 minutes (of course I was skinner then and road a significantly lighter bike).  The total ride time was 2:30; but we were out for 3:40.  Max 169 and average 140.  My riding buddy climbs faster than I do and I descend faster.  So the average includes about 5 rest breaks (one at the top and 4 during the ride) while we re-grouped.  I really like riding Tiger and I climbed some technical sections for the first time.  I also rolled a pretty good sized drop (first time).  The ride was awesome and my riding position was really good as was my cornering technique (thanks to Kat).

Switchbacks

Saturday, May 23, 2009
Today I ran (slowly) outside for the first time in a least a month.  It was tough but felt good.  Just 30 minutes. Max 146 (73%) .  average 128 (64%) including warmup.  Average for run was about 70%MHR  289 calories.

Friday afternoons there is a  freeride clinic at the colonnade.  It is inexpensive ($10) and for women only.  This week the topic was switchbacks.  I brought the  Ventana with me and my heart sank when they said we were working on switchbacks because the bike is really big and heavy (I'm guessing it is over 40 lbs) and has a large turning radius.  As it turned out I did great on the Ventana and it handled great.  By the end of class we had rode most of the switchbacks at the colonnade which is pretty amazing.  I'm loving the Ventana!  I'm amazed at how much my skills have improved at the Colonnade!

I slept in this morning because I didn't get home till after 9pm from the ride last night and I'm planning on riding at the worm today. There is a group ride at 6pm; but I think I'll ride as soon as I get there (around 5:30pm) so I can get home a little earlier. I love mountain biking but riding after work means driving to work. Taking the bus is a bit in conflict with mountain biking and swimming.

So, I'm toying with the idea of driving in on Wednesday and Friday (and mountain biking after work) and then bringing my road bike to work (on the bus) Monday and Thursday and riding home. I could swim on Wednesday and Friday if I dropped my bike off in my office and then drove over to the pool. It is the beginning of a plan. This still allows me to get a treadmill workout before work on Monday and Thursday (and take Tuesday as a day off). It just might work :)

Rode Grand Ridge (or shall I say I pushed my bike up and rode down). It is a tough climb. I don't have the endurance to climb all the way up. So I push my bike up the steeper sections and then ride for a while. I pushed 3/4 of the lower half and rode the upper half. My lung capacity is at 350 now which isn't great but beats the 200's. I should be over 400. My lungs felt wooden when I started the road climb up the actual trail head; the inhaler helped quite a bit (which I used at the trail head).

Today was a treadmill day. I warmed up for 5 minutes, then started an easy jog. My legs complained a lot. It is obvious that I haven't been running is a while. I jogged/walked for 30 minutes. Total of 1.5 miles. Today was the last day of antibiotics for the UTI.

Went to a doctor in Vancouver for urinary track infection. Took most of the night to start feeling better. I started showing signs of it on Tuesday, I should have gone to the doctor sooner. By the time I sought out a doctor I was is quite a bit of pain.

Rode tiger with Fredrika. The climb was tough (3 miles) and I walked part of it. The descent was lovely.

Friday, May 8, 2009
Rode the colonnade with Fredrika, Ann and Karen. I took the new bike (Ventana) and had a great time. It jumps really well (we played on the beginner jump) and then shifted our attention to the upper rock waterfall and another rock drop. I rode both really well and the Ventana handled them really well.
